armenpress: JAPAN TO SPONSOR THE OPERA HOUSE

YEREVAN, MARCH 28, ARMENPRESS: Japanese newly appointed ambassador to Yerevan Isay Nomura said today that his government is set to release a 29,5 million Yens (about $300,000 US) worth grant to Yerevan opera and ballet theatre for purchasing sound equipments. The ambassador was meeting with deputy culture minister Alis Adamian to sign a memorandum and exchange musical notes.

Mrs. Adamian briefly spoke about the history of the Opera house recalling that one of its best performances has been Chio-Chio-san. The building, which is currently under repair by the support of an American billionaire of Armenian origin Kirk Kirkorian, is going to be one of the best opera houses in the world, she said.

Ambassador Nomura said in turn that the gift of the Japanese government will bridge the cultures of the two countries, including mutual performance-visits to Japan and Armenia.

As the director of Yerevan Opera house Kamo Hovhannissian said, their sound equipments are out of date and during any ceremony or event they rent the necessary equipment from other organizations. This new acquisition will be a major help to the theatre, he said.
