azg: PAN-ARMENIAN ORGANIZATION TO BE FOUNDED NEXT AUTUMN

Chairman of the Union of Russian Armenians Ara Abrahamian spoke Thursday about his plans to found a pan-Armenian organization. The decision to this effect was adopted by a last year conference, held in Moscow and dedicated to challenges Armenia is facing at the crossroad of two centuries. The conference also set up a task force to steer the preparation works, which is said to have designed the Regulation of the new organization, its concept, supposed to be submitted to the founding congress next autumn.

The first session of the task force is being held today in Yerevan with participation of delegates from around 35 countries. Ara Abrahamian said the new organization would try to encompass all Armenian organizations across the globe. According to him, the new structure’s main goals will be to strengthen Armenian State, seek for international recognition of Armenian genocide (regulation of Karabagh problem is viewed in this context) and help develop Armenian economy.

In response to a question whether the organization that backed Kocharian’s candidacy in the recent election, has the moral right to seek foundation of such an organization, when at least half of Armenians do not recognize the legitimacy of reelected Kocharian, Abrahamian said the moral assessment to this was given by Russian president Putin who was the first to congratulate Kocharian on his reelection. He also fought back saying that the decision to back Kocharian was taken at the meeting of regional chapters of the Union.

A Moscow-based political analyst Andranik Mihranian joined in to lash out on opposition arguing that its continued mass rallies are actually diminishing Armenia’s image, de-legitimizing Armenian leadership and aggravating the situation, as “the small Armenia is heavily dependent on international lending organizations and on its close and faraway neighbors.”

Continuing Abrahamian said that the Union cooperates also with Armenian opposition, as it is too a segment of the nation. He added that both the authorities and the opposition must act within the boundaries of the law.
