azg: ARMENIAN MONUMENTS DESTROYED IN AZERBAIJAN

Armenian foreign minister Vartan Oskanian severely criticized today the authorities in neighboring Azerbaijan for systematic demolition of Armenian architectural and historical monuments located in its territory, Armenpress reported.

Speaking at conference convened by National Academy of Sciences and prompted by alarming reports about thousands of Armenian monuments being destroyed in Azerbaijan, the minister said the conference is emphasized by Armenian authorities not only in terms of culture but also of politics.

The focus of the conference was on Armenian monuments in Azerbaijan’s autonomous republic of Nakhichevan, where according to confirmed reports, thousands of Armenian khachkars (cross stones) were destroyed by Azerbaijanis.

The minister said he had sent a letter to UNESCO last year requesting that a commission be dispatched to the region to see the state of Armenian monuments. UNESCO sent a delegation; the demolition was stopped for a while but after it left destruction resumed at a bigger scale. In conclusion he said Armenian authorities are doing what is possible to stop destruction of Armenian monuments in Azerbaijan.

Participants of the conference have applied to Armenian government, foreign affairs ministry and Armenian diplomatic missions abroad to undertake all possible measures, set by international laws, to condemn and stop demolition of Armenian monuments in Azerbaijan.
