armenpress: MUNICH OPERA THEATER TO STAGE ARMENIAN COMPOSER´S OPERA

YEREVAN, FEBRUARY 13, ARMENPRESS: The Opera theater in Germany’s Munich is preparing a staging of a prominent Armenian composer Avet Terterian’s ‘Earthquake” opera. The first opening night is scheduled for March 16. The composer’s widow Irena Terterian is expected to attend the premiere.

Terterian composed his second opera in 1984, four years ahead of a devastating earthquake that rocked the north of Armenia razing to ground villages and towns and claiming an estimated 25,000 lives. The opera was based on an eponymous novel of a German writer Henrich von Kleist.

Terterian nourished a special attitude towards German topics. He composed his first opera “In Fire Chain’, in 1967, also based on a German novel. It was staged in Yerevan and German Halle. His next plan was to use some of the works of Bertold Brecht. Al expenses for production of the ‘Earthquake” are covered by the govenrment of German.
