ArmenPress: ARMENIA’S PRESIDENT TO MEET WITH MEMBERS OF GERMAN ARMENIAN COMMUNITY

YEREVAN, JANUARY 14, ARMENPRESS: The itinerary of Armenian president’s working visit to the Federal Republic of Germany from January 14 to 15 includes also meetings with members of German Armenian community.

The German Armenian community was mainly formed in the last decades as a result of migration of Armenians from the Near and Middle East countries. Before the 60-s the number of German Armenians was around 3,000, currently there is a 30,000 strong community.

Beginning from 1975 several Armenian cultural associations were created in Hamburg, Munich, Berlin, Cologne, Frankfurt on Main, Schtudgart and other cities. The German Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church was established in 1991 in Cologne. There is as well a small Protestant community, doing active charity work in Armenia and Karabagh.

German Armenian youth organizations are becoming active recently: Armenian Youth Council is mainly involved in cultural and sport events, Armenian Students Association, based in Hanover, is organizing various meetings and discussions on different Armenian issues.

In terms of education, there are no Armenian schools in Germany, but there are Sunday classes organized by church communities and cultural unions.
