ArmenPress: LEVEL OF LAKE SEVAN GOES UP BY 46 CENTIMETERS

YEREVAN, DECEMBER 25, ARMENPRESS: Armenian ecologists estimate that the increase in the level of one of the highest lakes in the world Sevan by 46 centimeters, against the same period of the previous year, was the year’s biggest nature protection achievement.

As Nature Ministry press secretary said, due to the supervision, implemented by a government appointed special commission, not only water losses and illegal pumping decreased, but also only 98.3 million cubic meters of irrigation water was pumped out of the lake instead of the planned 150 million.

Taking into account the amount of water accumulated in reservoirs due to heavy precipitation of the year, the ministry is intended to come up with a proposal to reduce the threshold of to-be-pumped out irrigation water by 100 million cubic meters in 2003.

In accordance with the demands of the program on restoration, maintenance, reproduction and utilization of lake Sevan’s ecosystems, the ministry specialists are currently estimating the resources of the water collecting reservoirs to verify water balance of the lake by advanced methods. Evaporation indexes are also being verified with regard to climatic changes and water temperature.

To enhance economy drive, the ministry board will consider the issue of launching an oversight process to verify the sizes of the plots irrigated by Sevan-Hrazdan water system and efficient utilization of irrigation water.
