Asbarez: 120 Associations Unite, Demand Turkey Rejection

The European Armenian Federation stated today that a week after the launch of its call to EU, 120 political, spiritual, education, social, cultural, athletic, medical, relief and youth organizations and associations of Europe from Belgium, France, Germany, Greece, Netherlands, Switzerland have already joined in to oppose Turkish membership into the European Union (EU). Signatories include ARF, AGBU, Ramgavar, Hamazkaine, ARS, Homenetmen, AYF chapters and associations.

The call targets the 15 Governments comprising the EU and denounces the unyielding pressure exerted by Turkey to force its accession to the EU, urging the European executive not to yield to intimidation, or pressures.

The objections expressed by this appeal recall Turkish indifference to the moral values and ideals of peace and justice characterizing the European Union, underlining that this country remains a genocidal, denialist, aggressive state.

“Armenian European citizens are probably better placed in the Union to judge the actual culture of violence prevailing in Turkey. We know quite well the fallacious nature of never-ending Turkish pledges and the duplicity of its state machine. It would be a pity and even a fault if European policy-makers don’t take our experience into account, declared Laurent Leylekian, executive director of the European Armenian Federation. “We continue to deeply believe that the reasoning behind the integration of Turkey into the EU—to transform it into a democratic country—is an illusion. Turkey has been part of the Council of Europe for fifty years and has yet to become democratic, just as the Nazi regime did not became tolerant after Munich in 1938. This kind of regime is structurally working on battles of will and will become democratic only under duress.”
