PanArmenian: PROGRESS IN REGION IMPOSSIBLE WITHOUT NORMALIZING ARMENIAN-TURKISH RELATIONS, FIRST FOREIGN MINISTER OF INDEPENDENT ARMENIA SUPPOSES

Any substantial positive shift of the situation in the region is impossible without normalization of the relations between Armenia and Turkey. As reported by “De Facto” agency, first foreign minister of independent Armenia, chief of the Armenian center for national and international research Raffi Hovannisian stated it. In his words, the establishment of democratic relations between Yerevan and Ankara will let solve problems important in geopolitical respect. These, in particular, include not allowing emergence of new dividing lines in the region. It is impossible to create a regional security system without normalization of the relations between Armenia and Turkey, the ex-minister emphasized and expressed hope for the young generation of Armenian and Turkish politicians to display wish, courage and will to solve the problem. Raffi Hovannisian called the policy kept by Yerevan regarding Ankara correct in general. Armenia is ready to establish diplomatic relations with Turkey without any preconditions, but these intentions will remain such if Ankara does not show adequate tendency, the politician noted. “However, the normalization of the Armenian-Turkish relations is inadmissible at the expense of “our collective memory and all-Armenian rights,” – he emphasized implying the recognition of the Armenian genocide in Ottoman Turkey in 1915-1923.
