The International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) has accepted
Armenia’s application, which requests that the Armenian national
men’s team be allowed to participate in the qualifying tournament
for the second division of the 2004 World Championship.

Yerkramas newspaper reports that the IIHF did this as an
exception, although the deadline for submitting documents to
participate in the tournaments of the new season had expired. In
April next year, Armenian ice knights will go into the wild blue
yonder to Oakland, New Zealand, where they will play in the fourth
league of the World Championship along with the hosts of the
tournament and teams from Luxembourg and Turkey. Armenian hockey
players will make their debut at the international level. Two
best national teams will win a chance to join the second division.

Armenia first launched national hockey championships two years
ago. Three clubs from Yerevan – ASK, Shengavit and Dynamo –
participate in them, playing between themselves in four rounds. At
the end of the season, the team which gains up to three victories
in a row becomes the champion.
