A well-known Turkish journalist Mehmet Ali Birand, contributing to all leading Turkish newspapers, said Ankara should open its sealed borders with Armenia, which “will provide us with an opportunity to influence developments there because of Armenia’s struggling economy and poor social conditions,” Armenpress reported.
Mehmet Ali Birand was the only Turkish journalist who was received by Armenian president Kocharian to grant an interview. Ali Birand was quoted by Istanbul-based The Turkish Daily News as saying that a helping hand stretched by Turkey to Armenia would be taken positively by Armenians.
