azg: IRAN, ARMENIA SET TO BUILD NEW ELECTRICITY LINE

Iranian and Armenian officials stamped an agreement on Wednesday in Yerevan to build a new electricity line with the capacity of 220 kWh.

The agreement was signed by Armenian deputy energy minister Iosiph Isayan, chief manager of Iranian Sanir company Alireza Katkhodai and Novrus Kohzadi, governor of Iranian export and development bank. The latter has committed to provide funds for the construction, Armenpress reported.

Present were also Iranian ambassador to Yerevan Mohammad Koleini and energy minister of Armenia Armen Movsisian.

The electricity line running from Armenian Shinuhayr to Agarak settlement near the Iranian border will be a component of an Iran-Armenia energy exchange line together with Agarak-220 switching substation that ensures uninterrupted flow of energy from Armenia to Iran and backward.

Speaking after the signing ceremony Movsisian said the Iranian export and development bank has pledged to fund joint Armenian-Iranian projects. For that purpose, he said, a $20 million credit line was opened. The construction of the new line will cost, according to preliminary estimations, about $8.5 million.

It is supposed to be over by the end of 2003 and will increase energy transfer capacities from current 250 megawatt to 350 megawatt. Between 1998-22201 Armenia and Iran exchanged some 1.3 billion kWh energy.
