azg: ARMENIAN SCIENTISTS AWARDED UN PRIZE

A prominent Armenian seismologist, professor Sergey Balasanian, chairman of Armenian Association of Earth Physics, was awarded a UN award of $50,000 and Crystal Prize for his contributions to reducing natural calamities-stemming dangers, developing seismic technology and their practical application, The prize was awarded in Geneva October 9 at UN Congress Hall.

Speaking to reporters today professor Balasanian said his speech in Geneva was dedicated to the strategy aimed for reducing the danger of calamities in the 21-st century.

He said his candidacy was picked up by an independent jury of 19 experts, chaired by a UN Secretary General Assistant on Humanitarian Issues.

Balasanian said Armenia was the only country in which a government-affiliated seismic protection service was founded back in 1991 and a special legislation on seismic protection was Passed.
