AZG: IT DEVELOPS IN ARMENIA

Leda Systems is one of the leading world companies, engaged in designing microcircuits, intelligent systems and has customers in around 60 countries, including Microsoft, Intel, Sony, Toshiba and others. Leda System’s president is a former resident of Yerevan Vahram Muradian, who established in the USA years ago. His main office is in Dallas, Texas. Leda Systems’ Yerevan branch opened two years ago. Then it hired 60 people, now they are 120.

Armenian president Robert Kocharian visited the company on Thursday. He first was briefed on the training curriculum of 60 second-year students of radio-electronics department of the Yerevan Engineering University who were selected from a big pool of students to specialize in software designing and programming. The agreement on this was reached by the University and the company. Thus, the latter prepares personnel for itself. After graduating the students offered jobs at the company.

President Kocharian was shown around the hall in which microcircuits are designed. The Armenian branch has bought new premises planning further expansion and development. Following this president Kocharian headed for an information technologies exhibition InfoTech opened in Yerevan that same day. About two dozens companies specializing in this are showing their products and services.

Speaking later to accompanying reporters president Kocharian said Armenian software companies managed to maintain the upturn tendency despite downward tendencies in the world. This branch has 5,000 workers, of which 3,500 are highly-paid qualified specialists. Kocharian also said that software companies are pleased with the Armenian law on intellectual property, passed recently by the parliament.

Kocharian also said that the aggregate volume of Armenian exports in the first nine months of 2002 exceeded the entire volume of exports in 2001.

In 2001 the entire exports volume amounted to $342.8 million. Kocharian said the official figures about economic growth rates for the first nine months would be published October 20.
