The well-known Turkologist, Murad Bodzholyan, who was detained on 26 January
by the National Security Ministry employees for spying for Turkey, has turned
down the services of his lawyer Ruben Balabanyan.

His wife, Lyudmila told Arminfo that she insisted that he should turn down
Balabanyan’s services. She said that Balabanyan’s activities made her doubt
his impartiality and moreover she thinks that Balabanyan cooperates with the
special services.

“He was unable to ensure proper protection of my husband and to defend his
rights,” Lyudmila Bodzholyan said. She described him as an unscrupulous and
immoral man. “He is by all means trying to keep me silent,” she noted. She
said that the lawyer intimidated her family especially after her appeal to
the Helsinki association’s branch in Armenia.

Moreover, she noted that after receiving 500 dollars from her, Balabanyan
started to blackmail her husband by saying that he had not received the money
and made him write letters home asking for payment.
